HOUSE ENERGY & COMMERCE COMMITTEE RELEASES BOLD DRAFT FOR ACTION ON GLOBAL WARMING

Statement of Betsy Loyless. Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy,
National Audubon Society

Washington, DC, March 31, 2009 - "The House Energy & Commerce Committee answered President Obama's call for bold action today by releasing a strong framework for comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation. Chairman Waxman and Chairman Markey have developed draft legislation that lays the vital groundwork for a long-term vision to reduce global warming pollution, cut our dependence on oil, and repower America with clean energy.

"By confronting these issues head on, we can protect our communities and the environment, revitalize our faltering economy, create millions of new jobs, and build the clean energy economy of the future.

"We welcome Chairman Waxman and Chairman Markey's leadership on this critical issue and look forward to working with the Committee, Congressional leaders, and the Obama Administration to pass strong climate and energy legislation this year."

MORE INFORMATION:

Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) chairs the House Energy & Commerce Committee and Congressman Ed Markey (D-MA) chairs the Subcommittee on Energy & the Environment. In addition to the release of the draft, the Committee outlined a schedule for moving forward with the legislation, beginning with hearings during the week of April 20th and a legislative markup in the Subcommittee to follow in late April.
