The 2008 Thomas W. Keesee, Jr. Conservation Award Luncheon held on November 5th at
the Rainbow Room, was once again an inspired event, honoring two legendary conservationists: George E. Pataki
and Peter A. A. Berle, in memoriam. We enjoyed touching remarks and a video tribute recognizing the great work
and accomplishments of our two honorees in the company of one magnificent Great Horned Owl.
With comic anecdotes and witty remarks, Bernadette Castro recognized the work of George E. Pataki
during his tenure as New York Governor and after. Pataki advanced many cutting-edge policies in conservation including protecting over
one million acres of open space, creating the first Bird Conservation Area in the nation, and facilitating renewable energy practices.
David Miller as well gave a poignant speech on Peter Berle’s fervent dedication to the National Audubon Society and his work to make the
Audubon an “effective force for change.” Berle played an important role in the passage of some of New York’s earliest environmental laws,
fighting to protect bird species and their native habitats. He was also an important voice in Washington during a pivotal time in the environmental movement.
Both individuals’ contributions, talent and commitment to the environment have created invaluable positive change towards a more sustainable
future. The luncheon not only recognized these guests, but also raised more than $200,000 to support Audubon New York’s statewide programs. If
